5 Solo flying tips for single moms by choice
Today, let's talk about something many single moms by choice might find both scary and empowering – traveling as a single mom with our little ones. Flying alone with your child can be both stressful and freeing. In this article, I’ll share my personal journey and offer tips and insights for fellow single moms by choice flying solo.
Facing the First Flight Alone
So, there I was, facing a mix of excitement and anxiety before my first solo flight. I vividly remember thinking, "This is going to be a lot, can I handle this on my own?"
That first flight was a rollercoaster of emotions, but it set the stage for empowerment and self-discovery.
I was dreading the flight - what if she cries the entire time? What if I forget something crucial? How will I manage feeding and napping? How will I occupy her and feed her through the flight?
These are common concerns when traveling as a single mom.
Booking Smart: Considering Nap Schedules
As a single mom, every decision is important. Booking flights become strategic.
So, when it came to flights, I quickly realized the importance of syncing up with my little one's nap schedule.
I didn’t want to book an early morning flight and have her lose a good night's sleep or have us arrive too late at night. It might sound small, but a well-timed nap can be a game-changer.
Packing Essentials: Traveling Light Yet Prepared
Packing is an art, especially when flying as a single mom. The key is balancing traveling light and being prepared for any situation.
Diapers, wipes, her crib sheets, sleep sack, and sound machine were my must-haves – easily accessible and ready for action.
Consider creating a travel list for everything your little one needs on a given day. If you need help, send me a message for my travel checklist!
Call the hotel in advance and find out if you can get a high chair in your room, or a roll-away crib, and ask if they have other essential items on hand to reduce your packing.
Managing the Flight: Tips for Smooth Sailing
1- Seat Selection
Regarding seats, I found having a window seat useful for having a little nook next to the window.
It allowed me to lean against it when I needed support and have my little one entertained by looking outside.
This small detail made a big difference when traveling as a single mom.
2- Entertainment Arsenal
Keeping your little one entertained is crucial for a peaceful flight. I had a variety of her favorite toys, and books, with a few new ones for her to explore to keep my kiddo engaged.
Distraction is a parent's best friend during flights. I also would walk her up and down the aisle a few times to pass the time, and that helped, too!
3- In-Flight Feeding Strategies
Feeding on a plane can be tricky. I was still breastfeeding for my first two flights, so it was really helpful to throw on my cover and feed her at take-off and landing.
But I also learned to pack familiar snacks and brought her favorite kind of baby food pouch (my go-to is Cerebelly) to keep things from getting messy.
Having a plan for feeding made the journey more comfortable for both of us. Keep a bib and wipes on hand; I remember going through many of them.
Navigating the Airport: From Arrival to Departure
4- Airport Logistics
Getting through airports can be overwhelming, especially when flying solo with a child.
Streamlining check-ins and moving through security efficiently became a skill I honed over time.
One valuable lesson I learned is that the stroller needs to go through security. I kept my little one in the carrier to simplify the process and ensure the empty bottom storage.
This way, I didn't have to worry about additional steps.
Pro tip: You can gate-check the stroller for free, and they provide plastic bags if needed.
5- Transportation Tactics
Getting to and from the airport with ease is essential. I found taking my car with her car seat in it simple, and I just parked it at Park n’ Fly.
It's all about minimizing stress and making the journey smooth. As she wasn't walking, I had her in my carrier and left my hands open to manage the bags.
I also found that people are very helpful when they see you solo with a baby and trying to lift your bags, so don’t stress too much. People are more than willing to help out when you need it. When we arrived, I rented a car with a seat.
Though I did need to install it, which was a bit of a hassle, I was glad I didn’t bring mine. I had her in the carrier the second time, taking the airport shuttle to the hotel.
To Sum Up
In conclusion, solo flying as a single mom by choice can be both challenging and yet incredibly rewarding when it's over.
Each flight is a chance to grow, learn, and enjoy the journey of motherhood. You've got the strength and resilience to make every flight a success.
So, pack your bags confidently, plan strategically, and prepare to embrace the skies.
Solo flying is not just about reaching a destination; it's about learning and growing along the way. Safe travels. You got this, mama!
